Causes of Leg Pain

A wide range of factors can cause muscle pain. Some factors, such as dehydration or muscle fatigue, are preventable and easily treated. Others, such as medical conditions relating to the nerves or arteries, require far more comprehensive treatment and can lead to life-changing complications if left uncared for. In addition to simple fatigue and medical conditions, trauma and injury can also result in chronic leg pain. Injuries can include torn or strained muscles, hairline fractures, inflamed tendons, and shin splints. In many cases, however, chronic pain stems from medical conditions. The following medical conditions can cause severe leg pain and likely will require treatment at Frisco Spine:

  • Blood clots or Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
  • Atherosclerosis – an obstruction of blood flow in the arteries
  • Bone infection (osteomyelitis)
  • Tissue infection (cellulitis)
  • Arthritis or gout
  • Nerve damage
  • Tumors and cysts – cancerous and benign
  • Slipped discs

Medical conditions such as blood clots or atherosclerosis can lead to severe complications if left untreated, including cardiac arrest. As leg pain can be a possible indicator of these conditions, it is very important that you seek medical care at Frisco Spine if you suffer from it. We can determine the cause of your leg pain and determine what treatment is necessary – non-surgical treatment or surgical care.

Sciatica

The sciatic nerve starts in the lower spine and runs down the back of both legs. It controls muscle movement on the back of the knees and lower leg, and provides sensation to the back of the thigh, the calf, and sole of the foot. If there is pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve, it can result in a condition known as sciatica, which typically results in sharp leg pains. Common causes of this condition include:

  • Slipped discs
  • Trauma to the pelvis, resulting in injury
  • Tumors
  • Piriformis syndrome – a disorder caused by muscles in the gluteal region

In minor cases, sciatica symptoms will gradually go away without treatment, as the cause of the condition is often temporary. However, if you are experiencing unexplained fevers along with back pain, back pain after a traumatic accident, swelling of the back, persistent pain or numbness in the legs and lower back, sudden pain when lying down, or urinary tract infection, it may indicate that more severe condition is present which may require medical treatment. Through a range of tests and exercises, we can determine the root cause of the condition. Blood tests, X-rays, MRIs, and other imaging exams may be performed, and the mobility and strength of the legs will be evaluated. A treatment plan will be outlined based on our findings.

Considerations

Cramps and fatigue can result from overuse of muscles, dehydration, strain during exercise, and even use of some medications. Leg pain stemming from these causes is often short-lived and can be alleviated through simple rest and relaxation – elevating the leg, icing it, massaging it, and taking over-the-counter medications. However, if leg pain persists, we highly recommend that you seek an opinion from our experienced and qualified experts. Other warning signs include legs that are:

  • Severely swollen
  • Black and blue
  • Cold or pale in appearance
  • Red in appearance or inflamed

Additionally, if home care remedies don’t alleviate leg pain, you should seek treatment.
