Artificial Disc Replacement

Alleviate Pain and Maintain Freedom of Motion

If you suffer from severe and constant back pain as a result of degenerative disc disease, we may be able to alleviate your pain and provide a lasting solution through artificial disc replacement. At Frisco Spine, we employ a team of multidisciplinary professionals – including neurosurgeons, physiatrists, and physical therapists – who emphasize a conservative approach to treatment and quality patient care. However, surgical options are always available, as our first priority is to provide treatment that is effective. If you have one or more degenerated discs in your spinal column and are suffering pain, allow us to help. We urge you to explore artificial disc replacement – contact our Frisco spine center today.

Degenerative Disc Disease

Intervertebral discs act as joints within the spinal column, allowing for slight movement and holding the vertebrae together. As a natural byproduct of the aging process, or as a result of degenerative disc disease, the intervertebral discs can wear down, causing significant pain and negatively impacting quality of life. Common symptoms of degenerative disc disease include:

  • Chronic lower back pain
  • Chronic neck pain
  • Pain in the hips and thighs
  • Pain in the buttocks
  • Pain in the arms, shoulders, and hands
  • Weakness or tingling around the knees

These symptoms occur because the discs exert pressure on nerve roots as they degenerate and become inflamed. The nerves spread throughout the body, making it possible for pain to spread from the spine to the extremities.

Artificial Disc Replacement

Among the surgical treatments offered at Frisco Spine is artificial disc replacement. This treatment method, which is a type of arthroplasty or surgical repair of a joint, involves the removal of a degenerated intervertebral disc from the spinal column and replacement with an artificial device. The damaged disc can be removed from either the lumbar (lower) section of the spine or the cervical (upper) section. The goal of the procedure is to alleviate or eliminate pain caused by degenerated intervertebral discs without affecting freedom of motion.

We perform artificial disc replacement at our spine center in Frisco, as we recognize the benefit of being able to offer patients comprehensive treatment at a single facility. Once the natural cervical or lumbar disc has been removed, the resulting space is filled with an artificial disc – a prosthetic device designed to provide stability and ensure unhindered motion in the vertebral segment. The artificial disc functions like the natural joint, and allows for lateral movement, rotation, bending, extension, and flexing. For the health, safety, and benefit of our patients, we utilize artificial discs that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, such as the PRESTIGE® cervical disc.
